Pingueculum
A pingueculum is an elevated bump on the white of the eye and most often appears on the side of the eye closest to the nose. It is a change in the normal tissue that results in a deposit of protein, fat and/or calcium, similar to a callus on the skin.
It can be red, irritated and inflamed, but with time it can become yellow due to exposure to sunlight. Some get white and chalky due to calcium deposition or vitamin deficiency.
Treatment
Surgery is not usually required, unless it becomes unsightly or interferes with vision. Wearing sunglasses can diminish the yellowing and prescribed eye drops may be required for continued redness and irritation.
